The right temperature with the BlackBody 989

How do you know that your clinical thermometer is correct?

In this article we present an updated product solution for the calibration of clinical thermometers and thermal imagers. The model is called the BlackBody 989 and is produced by our business partner, Isotech in the UK.

There has been great demand and the previous model, the 988, has been widely used during the current pandemic. Now Isotech has listened to its customers and made a new model that is smaller, easier to place, and has a wider temperature range and computer interface.

The unit is what is known as a black body and has a temperature range from 20 to 50 °C, with a resolution of 0.1 °C. The unit is 70 mm in diameter and has an emission factor of 0.97, which is the same as human skin.

The black body can be complemented with a tube to improve the measurement if desired. These are available in the lengths 40 mm and 210 mm. The shorter one is designed for hand-held clinical thermometers and the longer one is for thermal imagers.

The stated accuracy is ±0.2 degrees.

With the help of this unit, it has been possible to significantly improve measurement accuracy with use all around the world. One use, for example, is for thermal imagers that have been placed out to monitor the temperature of people walking by at train stations and airports.

The unit is also highly suitable to use to check the function, accuracy and performance of hand-held thermometers.

To sum up, this is an accurate, handy and portable unit that can easily be carried and used in different places to ensure reliable temperature measurement.

New signal converter in the product range

Pentronic’s product range now includes a new rail-mounted signal converter for installation on a rail inside a switch cabinet, the PR 6437 from PR Electronics. It is a complement to the popular HART signal converter for terminal heads, the PR 5437.

The new unit is manufactured in several designs. It can be ordered with dual inputs and dual outputs, which means it can be used as a 2-channel unit to save space inside the switch cabinet.

Thanks to the dual inputs, which can serve as a redundancy function, you also have the possibility of achieving SIL 3. The unit can also be ordered with Marine approval.

As always with PR’s HART signal converters, there is a universal input which can measure both Pt100s and thermocouples, and which has good input isolation for disturbance-free measurement. The measurement accuracy and speed are the same as on the previous model, that is, ±0.04°C and 0.07 sec.

The PR 6437 can be mounted and function in ambient temperatures down to -50°C and up to 85°C.

    Product information: Display, PR 4512

Transmit process data to your mobile device!

It is now possible to add Bluetooth communication and data logging to PR’s 4000 and 9000 units. Just mount PR electronics’ new PR 4512 display on the front of your existing 4000 or 9000 device and install the PPS app on your smart device (iOS and Android).

This enables live monitoring of your process data, data- and event logging and easy programming of your device. You can easily analyse both historical and real-time process data on your smart device while on site.

With its 100 MB onboard memory, the PR 4512 display can log up to 5.5 million data points depending on which PR device is connected.

The PR 4512 display also captures device-specific measurement, status or relay errors. The device’s built-in real-time clock logs the exact time of error events, including relay status. Both logs can be monitored directly in the PPS app or exported in CSV format. This provides incredible insight into loop performance and optimisation.

    Pentronic News 2020-1

In general, many things are different during this ongoing pandemic and crisis. But the need for temperature measurement still exists, even though it might be to a lesser extent or in some cases even to a greater extent.

People don’t always think about how important it is to measure temperature carefully and accurately. That doing so is often critically important for meeting the quality demands and standards required to get a product approved.

In this issue you will find interesting reading about two different companies where measurement plays an important role. Gain insight into the production process for carbon fibre components for remarkable vehicles and boats, and read about how to successfully solve measurement problems in heat treatment processes – at over 1200 °C!

Product information: New series of flow meters – Tricor Pro Plus

    Article number 07-00200

The new series of flow meters from Kem Kuppers, the Tricor Pro Plus, has advanced digital
signal processing and is specifically designed for applications where the need for small construction dimensions is a decisive factor. A flow meter from the PRO Plus series is the perfect
choice for challenging applications. The zero point is stable even under varying operational
conditions, the construction is robust, and the design is well planned. These meters are reliable with high measurement accuracy, long-term stability and high reproducibility – criteria that
are in particularly high demand in the process industry. Because the flow meters in the series
use a high measurement frequency that is far above the resonance range for normally occurring vibrations, they are ideal for applications where high vibration levels and other disruptive
signals occur. The series also features top-class signal processing and therefore offers an unrivalled performance package.
The PRO Plus series mass flow meter is available in three versions, which can be complemented with a local or external display: DN15 [½”], DN25 [1″] and DN50 [2″].
For digital data communication there are several options: Modbus, HART 7.5 communication
(HCF), Profibus PA, and Profibus DP. A 4-20mA analogue signal output is included with the
    HART.
The new flow meters are designed to meet Namur NE 132.

    Ex approved thermocouple sensor

To supplement the portfolio of Pentronics’ own EX rated sensors, we are now also launching a thermocouple sensor suitable for EX environments, Model 8108390. The thermocouple sensor is a more robust technology than the previously existing resistance thermometer and the thermocouple is very durable, for example in handling and installation steps. The thermocouple is also considerably more temperature resistant than Pt100 and therefore suitable in high temperature processes.
